British media say the scale of food waste in Britain and around the world is amazing.

As Christmas and New Year celebrations come to an end, people often look at their habits to improve their lifestyles, according to British websites.

When it comes to sorting out after the festival celebrations, one data may be particularly worth considering: about a third of the world's food produced annually for human consumption will be lost or wasted.

Global 1/3 food waste, harm to the environment, 13 billion tons

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) says about 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted, equivalent to more than half of the world's annual food production.

Meanwhile, 795 million people worldwide suffered from chronic malnutrition in -2016 in 2014.

It is estimated that food loss and waste in industrialized countries are as much as 680 billion US dollars. In addition, the loss and waste in developing countries are also as much as 310 billion US dollars. Unexpectedly, Western countries have the highest proportion of food waste, while developing countries are more likely to suffer from food loss.

Every year, consumers in rich countries waste almost as much food as net food production in sub-Saharan Africa, reaching 222 million tons. In Europe and North America, the average waste per person per year is 95-115 kilograms.

Recently, Jurgen Cropp, one of the authors of the paper and a member of the Institute of Climate Impact in Potsdam, Germany, said that research shows that the negative impact of agricultural production on carbon dioxide emissions is becoming more and more significant.

"Lifestyles around the world are changing, the demand for meat is increasing, and of course our meals are getting bigger and bigger," Cropp said. The more money a country has, the more meat it eats and the more calories it takes. " Cropp said that for every calorie of meat produced, it consumes 1 to 8 calories of grain, which is quite inefficient from the point of view of agricultural production.

Krop is also concerned about wasting food. He said, "a large number of the food we produce now can't go to the dining table." Scientists have calculated that waste of food will lead to a 10% increase in global greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Meanwhile, total greenhouse gas emissions from food waste rose from 130 million tons to 530 million tons, an increase of more than 300%. In the future, the environmental pollution caused by waste of food may increase by a huge margin, which may even be equivalent to 2.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Cropp added: "With the rise of emerging economies such as China and India, the total amount of food waste may rise rapidly. People's lifestyle, social welfare, dietary structure will change accordingly, and the proportion of meat will increase. Greenhouse gas emissions from food waste could increase significantly, undermining our tremendous efforts to protect the environment. "Avoiding waste of food can immediately alleviate many problems. It can not only reduce the impact of agriculture on the environment, but also save the resources needed for food production. It can also promote local, regional and global food safety."
